Saw a great cartoon today in The Oatmeal lampooning the world of social media and its self-proclaimed experts. You can see it here. Pay close attention to #5. (more…)

Is the blog really “social media,” or just another form of broadcast?
Thursday, August 26th, 2010Mitch Joel posted a thoughtful blog this week about the role of conversation in social media. You can read it here. I suggest you do. I’ll wait for you right here. (more…)

Social media tips for small businesses…and others.
Friday, August 6th, 2010Back by popular demand (Six people can’t be wrong!) I’ve got a new list for you this week. Bear in mind that this is not high-brow reading for top social media GuruChampionEvangilisticExperts. This is the basics. But I hear routinely from folks I know that they’re intimidated about getting started, or that they’ve joined LinkedIn or Twitter and are getting nothing from it. So this one’s for y’all! (more…)

Sometimes, you’re better off kicking it old school…
Friday, July 23rd, 2010By now, you know I’m a fan of social media. I believe it has enormous potential, and is enormously underused in the title and mortgage industry. In fact, I think there are a lot of communications and marketing tools out there that we’re not taking advantage of. But you know what? In some cases, that’s for the best. (more…)

The Box of Donuts is Evolving
Friday, July 16th, 2010Let’s be honest. The settlement services and even the mortgage industry are what we would politely call “traditional.” On good days, that means old-fashioned values like loyalty and honesty. But on the not-so-good days, shall we say it means, ahem, conservative? (more…)

Social media for businesses–You get out of it what you put into it!
Friday, June 25th, 2010I recently read a great blog post about social media strategy. Or, I should say, about the lack thereof. According to Mr. Bedell’s post, only 51% of businesses surveyed which are using social media for business purposes have a plan for doing so, even though 88% agreed it was, in theory, at least, a worthwhile endeavor.
Wow. (more…)

Advertising ain’t dead yet
Friday, November 6th, 2009
Part of being a social media guru (and I write that with tongue planted firmly in cheek) is that I get access to quite a few conversations among other social media experts, gurus, champions, evangelists, prophets, heralds and superstars. Many of these are quality discussions. But some of the comments I read are head-scratchers. (more…)

So, you say you want to start a blog?
Friday, October 23rd, 2009I can remember attending a couple of fairly worthless marketing/PR trade association meetings a few years ago where the only word spilling from everyone’s mouth seemed to be “blog.” Businesses just had to get into the act. ”Everyone” was doing it! Don’t ask “why.” Just blog, dammit! (more…)

The Great Recession continues. So…who’s ready to Tweet?!
Thursday, September 17th, 2009The general economy and flailing markets of the past year or so have definitely taken their toll on the people of the title and mortgage industry. You can hear it in the way they talk about business—those that are actually still doing business, that is. (more…)
